When we moved onto this site the garden space was a pioneer plant choked, hard pack of decomposed granite and sand. We then began to chop plants down in place(chop and drop) and left them as a nitrogen addition under the sheet mulching.
We added numerous organic materials as soil amendments (composted horse manure, mushroom compost, worm castings) and then topped it off with fresh straw. Within weeks we had mushrooms popping up throughout the garden.
At the time i did not have any cover crop materials so we forged on without building soil in that manner.
Within weeks we had mushrooms popping up through out the garden.
